I am right now standing at 5800-ish points with the following hangar with a 60-70% win rate:
Dragoon (2*/MK2 10) Bulwark (9)
9/9 Dragoon Bulwark
9/9 Storm Gust Invader
9/9 Taran Haechi
9/10 Orkan Thunder Inquisitor
Nothing too shabby so far, until I realize the following:
A. My hangar would get slaughtered in Beacon Rush. With everyone and their dog running Hellburners, Pursuers, Ao Juns, Areses and the like, I’d rather play Domination than any other mode out there. My Bulwarks would have a chance to contribute to the field.
B. Tankers are still prevalent. Every. Other. Game. For all the positive and negative incentives Pixonic places to discourage people from tanking, it is still more prevalent than ever. God knows how many times I have to try to carry my team to victory using nothing but two Bulwarks and a semi-optimized Invader…
C. The full-squad clan gang-up is less prevalent in Domination – for some reason, they are unable to use their pile-up tactics when it’s Domination time. I even won a match with randoms against a full clan squad on Yamantau (granted that two or three players from some of the S-ranked clans were on our team). In fact, more often than not, Domination is proving to be a slightly more subtle and chill affair than Beacon Rush.
D. My hangar is obsolete. Apart from the Bulwark and Invader, my Haechi and Inquisitor are nothing but second-class bots now.
E. Matchmaking is still a mess. Sometimes, you get a good fight. Other times, it’s just a mish-mash of ranks and players who do try to leave the match when they have the chance.
F. Reaching Champions League is easy if you have the right skills and if you play Domination, all day, every day. I am not joking around here. I see all sorts of bots in low Champions League, but at the same time, I see an Ares EVERY DAMN GAME, as well as an INVADER and AO JUN. I also see a BULWARK every other game, in addition to your usual suspects such as the Falcon, Pursuer, Spectre and Hellburner.
G. It’s still glorious to destroy top players from top clans. It’s also glorious to play with players from the same country that you come from. Most importantly, it’s amazing to win matches that are 5v6 and still win on top of them. Hell yes!
H. For those who ask which bot to drop on first: Drop your best long-range bot, right off the bat. You will never go wrong with Dragoon Bulwark. Unless you are facing a team of pro players, they will all underestimate the setup – until it hits them too late. Needless to say, I have w
H. For those who ask which bot to drop on first: Drop your best long-range bot, right off the bat. You will never go wrong with Dragoon Bulwark. Unless you are facing a team of pro players, they will all underestimate the setup – until it hits them too late. Needless to say, I have won a lot of matches with it and even capture a couple of beacons with this tip.
I. Now, for those of you who ask why drop a Dragoon Bulwark regardless of the map, here’s the thing: Your mish-mash team is pretty much going to have Invaders, Pursuers and Hellburners (or Kumihos) in the first wave. They will need fire support. Your presence will be the one that will determine whether you will win or lose the match. YES, TEMPO IS EVERYTHING.
J. Use bots that you are comfortable with. Use the top robots if you can. Milk every single trick that you can take out of your playbook. Fight to win, fight hard and fight to the end! This means that if you have a Falcon, Invader, Ao Jun, Ares and Bulwark, just make them survive as long as you can. Make sure that you contribute to the team by focusing fire on one robot at a time. Not even the damage-sponge Invader can survive a smart application of fire and maneuver.
Champions League is not anymore the same as before, to be perfectly honest. It has completely changed and I might also add that its prestige has already diminished in some way in recent days.
This is my journey so far in Champions League.
